TANKER Foundation Founder-Trustee, Dr Georgi Abraham, received the Recognition Award for Outstanding Achievement in Transplantation from Mr. Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, at the 32nd annual conference of the Indian Society of Organ Transplantation (ISOT), Friday, October 14, 2022.
It is to be noted that Dr Georgi Abraham is also the President-Elect of ISOT.
Mr. Gadkari is the Chief Patron of the annual conference of ISOT that was on at Nagpur from October 12-16, 2022.
In a video message, Dr Georgi Abraham spoke about his 42 years of service as a practising nephrologist from his days in the Christian Medical College Hospital, Vellore, in 1980.
He said India has outperformed developing nations in transplantation and its outcome.
He also spoke about the unmet challenges in India in transplantation, like:
- deceased donor transplant and transplant immunology;
- infections taking a toll of transplant patients – infections in India are different from those in other countries;
- biopsies – Dr Georgi said India has excellent pathologists who can support nephrologists; and
- training youngsters – he said there was a need to be bring them into the mainstream.
Wishing the conference all success, he let out a call for ISOT meet next year in Kolkata.
