What is EPO ?
Erythropoietin, commonly referred to as EPO, is a hormone predominantly produced by the kidney. It triggers the bone marrow to produce red blood cells (RBC) which carry oxygen rich blood to the various parts of the body
Why do patients undergoing dialysis need EPO injections?
Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) are unable to produce this hormone resulting in anaemia. This can result in tiredness, breathlessness and potentially cardiac complications. EPO Injections are an essential part of their treatment so that they can maintain a reasonably normal life.
Why is TANKER Foundation running a specific campaign for EPO?
TANKER Foundation, aided by their donors and Government subsidies offer free dialysis for needy patients who cannot afford the cost of dialysis. At present we have 650 patients in our 11 dialysis units. While Government subsidies cover the cost of dialysis materials and consumables, they do not cover cost related to EPO injections. It costs us INR Rs.800/- (USD11)) for each patient each month, out of our funds to provide this. We are seeking your donations to help offset some of this expense.
