The call of Dr. Georgi Abraham, Founder Trustee of TANKER Foundation, to help people of Andaman and Nicobar Islands with dialysis treatment came to fruition with the unit with 6 dialysis machines and other equipment being inaugurated at Pillar Hospital, Port Blair, Sunday, June 20, 2021.
Mr. Shekhar Mehta, Rotary International President 2021-2022, inaugurated the unit at Pillar Hospital at 10.30 am along with Rtn. Sharath Kumar VR, President of Rotary Club of Guindy, Rtn. S. Muthupalaniappan, Dist Governor RID 3232, Rtn. Sudip Mukherjee, Dist Governor RID 3291, (all virtually), and Dr. Georgi Abraham and Sister Jensia Mary of Pillar Hospital, along with Rtn Faizal of Rotary Port Blair, were present in person at the hospital premises.
Dr. Georgi Abraham, who had requested Rtn. Sharath Kumar to take up the project, spoke about the increasing need for dialysis treatment in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and was grateful that Rotary Guindy and Pillar Hospital had come forward to take up the project.
Ms Latha A. Kumaraswami, Managing-Trustee, TANKER Foundation, gave an update about the Foundation and the 11 dialysis units in Tamil Nadu and other centres in Imphal in Manipur, MGM Pondicherry, Tanzania and Vennikulam in Kerala.
Rtn. Sharat Kumar recalled his long association with TANKER when he and his fellow Leos raised funds for the Foundation in 1993 with the premiere of films ‘Thiruda Thiruda’ and ‘Daud’. He said he was very happy to be associated with the new dialysis centre.
Rotary Club of Guindy and its partners Rotary Chatswood Sunrise in Australia, Rotary Penang in Malaysia, Rotary Grand Baie in Mauritius, Rotary Club of Port Blair, TANKER Foundation and Pillar Hospital have joined hands to set up the Rotary TANKER Dialysis Centre at Port Blair.
