Acceding to a request by TANKER Foundation, Dr. K. Jayanth Murali, IPS, Director General of Police, ran a full marathon – 42 km – Sunday, June 12, 2022, at Indian Institute of Technology Madras for the benefit of police personnel.
The marathon was to enable TANKER raise funds for BP machines for all Tamil Nadu police stations so that police personnel can check their blood pressure regularly and take corrective action to avoid kidney disease.
Speaking at a function to mark the marathon, Dr. Jayanth Murali said when he was approached by TANKER Foundation he felt the need to do this for his fellow police personnel as they were under a lot of stress and prone to high BP.
He appreciated TANKER for doing this project and said it would greatly benefit the police.
Earlier, he had raised funds for dialysis machines for TANKER Foundation.
The Dean of IIT Madras, Mr. Koshy, who was also present, said he deeply appreciated DGP Jayanth Murali’s gesture and also wanted TANKER to conduct awareness and screening camps for IIT staff and students.
Dr. Georgi Abraham, Founder-Trustee of TANKER Foundation, said police personnel could record their BP on a daily basis at the station and if the BP was consistently high, then corrective measures could be taken after consulting a doctor.
Mrs. Latha A. Kumaraswami, Managing-Trustee of TANKER Foundation, expressed her gratitude to all police personnel and said they were also, along with all frontline workers, Angels on Earth, and that this project would help them keep their BP in check.
She said TANKER has done over 4.9 lakh dialysis through their 12 units and at present do 6,900 dialyses every month, helping over 700 patients.
TANKER has also conducted awareness programmes for over 1.9 lakh people and screened over 35,000 people for early detection of kidney disease.
Mrs. Vasanthi Ravichander, Head Admin TANKER Foundation, and Ms. Vidya Arumugam, a regular donor, spoke at the function. In fact, Ms. Vidya Arumugam was the catalyst for the conduct of the marathon. Her enthusiasm was infectious.
