TANKER Foundation Founder Trustee, Dr. Georgi Abraham, was invited by the Nephrology Society of Tanzania (NESOT) to its annual conference in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, to give away the Young Star in Nephrology award.
Dr. Georgi Abraham was in Dar es Salaam Thursday, August 14, 2025, to present the award to Dr. Daniel Msilanga of Muhimbili Medical College Hospital, Dar es Salaam.
Dr. Georgi Abraham was asked to talk about TANKER Foundation as it had a close association with the nephrology sector of the country. Finding that the country was in need of help to set up dialysis machines, Dr. Georgi Abraham initiated the setting up of one dialysis machine in Tanzania in 2005. Even when he visited the country in 2011, he found very few machines.
But, he said, he was amazed to know that Muhimbili Medical College Hospital now has 47 dialysis machines and nearly 400 patients benefit from it. What an evolution in 14 years, says Dr. Georgi Abraham.
About Dr. Daniel Msilanga, MD, MMED, M.Sc. Nephrology
Speaking about himself, he says:
My name is Daniel Msilanga, a lecturer at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in the Department of Internal Medicine, where I coordinate the Master of Science in Nephrology training, and a practising nephrologist at Muhimbili National Hospital.
On 14th August 2025, during the NESOT Conference, I was honoured to receive the Young Star TANKER Award, issued by Prof. Georgi Abraham, the first time this recognition has been awarded in Tanzania.
This award is not only a personal achievement but also a source of inspiration for other young nephrologists. It demonstrates that commitment to research, training, and patient care can achieve recognition. I hope it will encourage early-career nephrologists across Tanzania and beyond to pursue excellence, and remain committed to improving outcomes for kidney patients.
My aspiration is to build on this milestone by advancing kidney care in resource-limited settings.
Through training, mentorship, and research, I aim to strengthen nephrology capacity in sub-Saharan Africa, expand access to kidney care.
