World Kidney Day campaign in Brussels
Manneken Pis is a landmark bronze fountain scultpure in central Brussels, Belgium. It is Dutch for Little Pissing Man and depicts a naked little boy urinating into the fountain basin. It has been adopted for the Brussels World Kidney Day campaign with a simple message asking people to get their urine tested and talking to their GP.
The video features nephrologists, a kidney patient who is undergiong treatment, and another patient whose doctor failed to tell him to get his kidneys tested in spite of his being diabetic and having hypertension, raising awareness to prevent kidney disease.
In the end, International Federation of Kidney Foundation – WKA President, Mrs. Latha A. Kumaraswami, appreciates their campaign to spread awareness on kidney disease on World Kidney Day.
Manneken Pis was designed in its current form by the Brabantine sculptor Jerome Duquesnoy the Elder and installed sometime in 1618 or 1619. The current statue is a replica dating from 1965, with the original being kept in the Brussels City Museum.
World Kidney Day 2023 observed with zest
World Kidney Day was observed by all staff members of TANKER Foundation not just on March 9, 2023. Heavy preparations started a week ago to make this day a remarkable one, creating awareness through every possible means.
The staff members showed their creativity in observing the day: some made charts stressing on the importance of caring for one’s kidneys; some made cutouts of kidney and displayed them; some did rangoli to carry out the message; but everybody took part in the #showyourkidney challenge – without disrupting patient care.
On Thursday, March 9, 2023, World Kidney Day, the staff members pumped in even more energy into the day.
TANKER Foundation Managing-Trustee, Mrs. Latha A. Kumaraswami, Head Admin, Mrs. Vasanthi Ravichander, and enabler, Mrs. Rukmini, were out early in the day to catch beach walkers at Besant Nagar. They distributed caps carrying the message ‘Protect Your Kidney’ in English and Tamil. T-shirts, leaflets and bookmarks bearing the message ‘Kidney Health for All’ with the tagline: ‘Preparing for the Unexpected, Supporting the Vulnerable!’ were also distributed.
Every unit distributed the leaflets and bookmarks carrying the same message. They did it inside their dialysis unit for patient attendants, outside on the road, catching office-goers at traffic signals, auto drivers, housewives, senior citizens and youth.
Awareness was created among school children of A V Meiyappan Matriculation Higher Secondary School and Granny’s Care Play School who participated merrily.
In all, 150 students from class 7 and 8 of A V Meiyappan School and 16 kids from Granny’s Care Play School participated.
In all, there was effective dissemination of the message that kidney health should be of great concern to everyone as the incidence of kidney disease is on the rise, according to statistics.

TANKER Managing-Trustee on Radio Mirchi
It was a one hour of spreading awareness on kidney health through radio on World Kidney Day 2022, keeping in tune with the theme for this year: ‘Kidney Health for All – Bridge the knowledge gap to better kidney care’.
TANKER Foundation Managing-Trustee, Mrs. Latha A. Kumaraswami, was interviewed by Radio Mirchi (FM 98.3) from 9 am to 10 am, Thursday, March 10, 2022.
She pointed out that awareness on kidney health and diseases was growing these days. The government was also contributing towards it, she said.
Listing the causes for kidney diseases – lifestyle, uncontrolled diabetes, high blood pressure, alcohol, smoking and self-medication – Mrs. Latha Kumaraswami also pointed the way out.
She said it was important to control blood sugar, blood pressure, abstaining from alcohol and smoking and taking less of salt and sugar. Also, it was equally important to drink a lot of water and having a balanced diet. “Yoga is good for any disease,” she pointed out.
Mrs. Latha Kumaraswami praised nephrologist, Dr. Georgi Abraham, for being the inspiration for starting TANKER Foundation. She said he pioneered CAPD in India and also helped provide dialysis for HIV patients – a first in India, again.
She was thankful to the staff of TANKER, whom she called Angels on Earth – Nadamadum Kadavulgal – for doing dialysis even during the pandemic.
As her final message, Mrs. Latha Kumaraswami said it was important to create awareness among the staff, caregivers, healthcare professionals and the general public. Through TANKER, she offered help to those in need.
TANKER honchos on PSG College radio
TANKER Foundation Managing-Trustee, Mrs. Latha A. Kumaraswami, and Advisory Member and Head of TANKER Awareness and Prevention Programme, Mrs. Rajalakshmi Ravi, not only inspired the students of PSG College, Coimbatore, but also cautioned them about kidney disease on the occasion of World Kidney Day 2022, observed Thursday, March 10.
Participating in a one-hour interview on the community radio of the college (@RADIO_HUB.PSGTECH), the two honchos of TANKER matched the tempo of RJ Nirmal and RJ Harini. The ‘Tea Time Live Show’ was live on the radio’s Instagram page.
Mrs. Latha Kumaraswami talked at length about the launching of the foundation in 1993 in a small way and was full of praise for Founder-Trustee, Dr. Georgi Abraham. He is a simple man and a dedicated nephrologist whose autobiography title reads: My Patients My God, she said. He was very inspirational in starting TANKER and initiating dialysis for HIV patients – a first in India, she explained.
Mrs. Rajalakshmi Ravi was full of information about the various awareness and prevention programmes of TANKER. Since she works in the field, she was able to give first-hand information about the lack of awareness among the general public not only about kidney diseases but also their own health. Many a time, it was only during TANKER screening camps that people come to know that they have diabetes or high blood pressure, she elucidated.
She said she was happy that Metrowater invited them to do a screening camp for all its employees. It was an eye-opener for us, she said, and added that many people came to know about their health problems only at the camp.
There is meticulous planning to run the camps and there is follow-up from TANKER staff on those who need help with their kidneys. Come to us if you have a kidney problem, she invited the listeners graciously.
Mrs. Rajalakshmi Ravi finally said she would like to conduct a screening camp on the PSG campus and also create awareness among the staff and students about kidney health. The RJs welcomed the suggestion.

WORLD KIDNEY DAY - 2021
Living well with kidney disease
World Kidney Day, a joint effort of the International Federation of Kidney Foundations-World Kidney Alliance (IFKF-WKA) and the International Society of Nephrology (ISN), is observed March 11. World Kidney Day 2021’s theme is Kidney Health for Everyone Everywhere – Living Well with Kidney Disease.
It aims to increase education and awareness about effective symptom management and patient empowerment, with the ultimate goal of encouraging the meaningful participation in everyday life of people living with kidney disease.
Kidney organisations from all over the world will be hosting events which will help create more awareness about kidney disease and patient care. TANKER Foundation is part of the IFKF-WKA and will be distributing masks and supporting webinars on kidney care.
According to TANKER Foundation Managing-Trustee, Ms Latha A. Kumaraswami, who is also President-Elect of IFKF-WKA, almost 2.5 lakh people die of kidney failure in India every year. It is the third largest killer after malignancy and heart disease. Millions suffer from some form of kidney disease and many of them, particularly in India, cannot afford the cost of treatment or care.
In Tamil Nadu, around 14,440 people have kidney failure every year, and only 10% have access to treatment – which is when TANKER Foundation steps in by providing free/subsidized dialysis and one-time financial help for medication, investigation and transplantation. It also spreads awareness about kidney disease and its prevention.
