It was a remote village where the TANKER Awareness and Prevention Program (TAPP) of TANKER Foundation conducted its screening camp. But the TAPP team came back with a lot of satisfaction as they found that 90 per cent of the participants did not have diabetes and their blood pressure was well within range!
The camp, held Friday, July 7, 2023, at Annai Mahalir Kuzhu in Inthalur village of Acharapakkam, was guided by Dr. Sharmila.
The TAPP team comprised Mrs. Ramapriya and Mrs. Deepa, and they were ably assisted by a volunteer.
In all, 93 members of the public attended the camp and there were a lot of senior citizens.
The participants had their BMI and blood pressure checked and their capillary blood glucose and urine tested.
The newly-detected diabetes and hypertension cases were referred to the primary health centre.
What was pleasantly surprising was that 90 per cent of the participants did not have diabetes and their blood pressure was well within range. When the reason for this wonderful news was thought over, the TAPP team came to know that since it is a remote village, most of the people have to walk at least 3 km to reach a bus stop! This was very encouraging feedback and a valuable lesson in keeping fit.
